User data as described elsewhere in the Policy may be used for scientific/academic purposes. Specifically, by researchers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Second Language Studies department. Researchers conducting second language studies, second language acquisition, linguistic, and/or Japanese as a foreign language research may access user study data and some demographic data, and will avoid using and/or accessing identifiable user information. By signing up for an account and using the site and its services, you essentially become a research participant and, by default, opt-in to allowing your data to be used for research purposes and analysis.
According to the University of Hawaii's institutional review board ("IRB"), research participants have the following rights:
- To be treated with respect, including respecting your decision whether or not to enroll, continue, or stop being in a study.
- To choose to stop being in a study at any time.
- To be given adequate time to read the consent form and have the research study explained to you.
- To be given time to ask questions at any time throughout the study, and to be told whom you can contact if you have any more questions.
- To be given a copy of the consent form after you have signed it.
As a research participant, you may contact the University of Hawaii's Human Studies Program if you need more information about your rights.

There are no risks or benefits to allowing your data to be used for research or academic purposes. Your participation is voluntary; you may ask to not have your data used for research/academic purposes by emailing Tanukanji LLC at: tanukanjillc@gmail.com. Your registered name (both first and last) will not be collected or used for research/academic purposes. All identifiable information will be excluded as much as necessary. You do not have to pay to be eligible to have your data used for research/academic purposes. Neither will you be financially compensated for the usage of your data on this site. All personal information will be kept confidential to the extent allowed by law. Several public agencies with responsibility for research oversight, including the UH Human Studies Program, have authority to review research records.
